Throughout 2026, remember your persecuted family in prayer
Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List has been released. And the scope of Christian persecution it reveals is shocking.
More than 388 million Christians face high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith in Jesus. That’s 1 in 7 Christians, worldwide.
To put that in perspective, that’s more than the entire population of the United States, all at risk simply because of the God they choose to follow. If you were to count each Chrisitan facing persecution and discrimination, and you counted one person per second, it would take you more than 15 months of non-stop counting to get to the full number.
Yet while these stats seem huge—and they are—God is bigger. As Christians, we trust in the words of Jesus, that with God, “all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). We also trust that He’s given us the ability to take action … to pray.
1 John 5:14 says: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” So as you consider the massive problem of persecution facing persecuted Christians, we ask you to take massive action in response and pray this year. Stand in solidarity with your brothers and sisters around the world who share your faith … but not your freedom.
Throughout 2026, you can pray with believers in all 50 countries on Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List. Here’s how:
Afghanistan (No. 11)
Pray for Christians in Afghanistan who still endure after four-and-a-half years of Taliban rule. Ask God to protect His people and give them a spirit of hope and peace.
Several neighboring nations have deported Afghan refugees. Pray for any Afghan Christian refugees who may be among this group; pray they will be protected from harm and be comforted.
Pray that God will change the hearts of the Taliban leaders. Ask God to soften their stance toward Christians and other religious minorities, and bring them the hope and joy of Christ.
Lord Jesus, we marvel at the brave faith of our family in Afghanistan, but our hearts also ache at their suffering. Continue to fill Your children with the bright light of Christ, refreshing their hope and empowering their witness. Watch over Your people, keep them from harm, and provide avenues for them to flourish. We pray against further deportations, and that You would soften the hearts of the Taliban, and those in neighboring countries, towards women and vulnerable minorities. Amen.
Algeria (No. 20)
Nearly every Protestant church in Algeria has been forced to close or has suspended services. Pray that the Christians who have lost their places of worship will be able to find fellowship.

Pray for church leaders who are facing court cases for their commitment to the gospel. Pray they will be acquitted and able to continue to minister without harassment.
Heavenly Father, as so many Algerian Christians who follow You live at constant risk, we pray for their safety, their resilience and their courage. Bless those who are imprisoned or face arrest and fines simply because of their faith. Please be with converts who are shunned by their families or expelled from their homes – be a ‘Father to the fatherless’ in the words of Psalm 68:5. We ask this for the sake of Your Son, Jesus, Amen.

Any Christian who shares their faith can face consequences. Ask God to sustain believers and to help them to wisely and courageously live out the gospel.
Heavenly Father, we give You thanks for the Omani Sultan who has allowed so many followers of Jesus to freely live out their faith. We pray for a similar openness to be extended to those Omani people who want to leave Islam to follow You. We pray they would find fellowship and be comforted when they lose loved ones or opportunities because of their faith in Jesus. We ask that You would be at work in Oman, blessing the monarchy and bringing more openness to every believer in the country. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Pakistan (No. 8)
Pakistan’s blasphemy laws continue to impact Christians. Pray for those accused unjustly of blasphemy and ask that God will help them avoid imprisonment or vigilante ‘justice’.
Many Pakistani Christians are forced into menial jobs because of their identities as followers of Christ. Pray these believers will be sustained and know their value.
Pakistan’s recent conflict with India left believers in both places filled with fear. Thank God that a ceasefire has held and pray that God’s perfect peace will reign.
Lord Jesus, our hearts are heavy at the dangers facing our family in Pakistan. Bring an end to false blasphemy accusations – expose the lies and hatred, and prompt changes to the law or its repeal. Protect young girls and surround them with environments that encourage their flourishing. Breathe hope and purpose into the hearts of those in bondage to poverty and labor and give them freedom. Soften the hearts of the authorities towards Christians. Amen.
Qatar (No. 44)
Qatar’s population is about 88% foreign. Praise God for the churches and church leaders who serve expatriate communities, and that they can do so openly.
Native Qataris are unable to freely convert from Islam. Pray that there would be freedom of faith.
Ask God to protect secret Christian converts in Qatar, that they would be safe from harm or arrest.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the many converts in Qatar who have encountered You over recent years. Strengthen, encourage and protect them, provide spaces for them to gather safely, and give them opportunities to share their faith with those who are seeking You. Give church leaders wisdom, discernment and courage amid scrutiny. Work in the hearts of the authorities and monarchy, drawing them to You through dreams, visions and the faithful witness of Your children. Amen.
Saudi Arabia (No. 13)

Pray for expatriate believers who meet in secret, that they can continue to worship without hindrance.
Ask God to reach people in Saudi Arabia through dreams and visions – and that they would find opportunities for discipleship.
Father, we thank You for the courage and perseverance of Christians in Saudi Arabia. Please grant them Your peace, wisdom and protection as they walk a difficult path. Would You help them to find and connect with other believers for communion and discipleship? We pray that You will continue to reveal Yourself in dreams and visions to Your children in Saudi Arabia, and that there will be opportunities for the gospel message to spread, despite hostility. Amen.
.
Somalia (No. 2)
Somalia is one of the most dangerous places to live as a Christian. Pray that the small number of believers would find shelter and safety in the arms of Jesus.
Al-Shabaab, the Islamic extremist group, target anyone they suspect of being Christian. Ask God to protect Christians and keep them from death or attack.
Pray that Somali believers would know they aren’t alone, even if they are forced to worship in secret.
Somalia is traumatised, and Christian Somalis even more so. Pray that God’s Spirit will minister to them and that He would bring healing to their minds and spirits.
Pray with Aweis Ali (a Somali believer and church leader in the Horn of Africa) for the Somali church:
“Heavenly Father, in Your holy name, we pray. When You are with us, no one can be against us. What people see as impossible, like a Somali church, is in fact possible because of You. Because when we have You, everything for Your Kingdom is possible. No persecution, rejection, excommunication or threat could remove the light from the Somali people. You told us that the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church. In Your name, we pray. Amen.”
Sudan (No. 4)
As the brutal civil war in Sudan continues, ask God to bring about a peaceful resolution and help the church to be peacemakers in this war.
Pray for believers who suffer from the civil war and have been forced to flee, or who have no choice but to stay and hunker down. Ask God to protect them.
Pray that Christians in Sudan could carefully live as salt and light, and show that Jesus’ peace is a better way.
Pray for the future of the church in Sudan and wisdom for her leaders. Even if the warring parties are able to come to a peace resolution, neither are favorable towards the church.
Lord Jesus, we pray for Your peace to rain down on Sudan. We pray for the future of Your church, that it may continue to be salt and light in their dark country. Please protect our brothers and sisters there and provide all they need during this incredibly difficult time. We pray that Christians will not be seen as a threat by society and warring factions, but as a blessing in their communities. Amen
Syria (No. 6)
In the aftermath of the fall of the Assad regime, many Christians live with constant uncertainty. Pray that believers would lean on God as their ‘Rock eternal’ (Isaiah 26:4).
Pray for converts from Islam, that they would find love and fellowship even when they encounter rejection by family and friends.
Pray for the victims of the Damascus church attack, that their wounds would be healed, and they would feel God’s closeness as they decide how best to live out their faith.
Lord, the Syrian people have been through so much – and Your people have endured endless trials and tribulations. And now, God, we see how they face such an uncertain future, unsure of what new leadership and new regimes will mean for them, even as the reality has grown even more dangerous. God, we implore You to bring
Your perfect peace to Syria; help new leaders to recognize how Syrian Christians have been part of the fabric of the region since the time of Christ. Lord, You brought St Paul to You as he travelled to Damascus, the capital of Syria. We pray that You would repeat this miracle in our
time, reaching the hearts of even those who oppose You the most. In Jesus’ name, we ask these things. Amen.
Tajikistan (No. 27)
The government of Tajikistan monitors communities of believers. Ask God to keep Christians safe and give extra grace to church leaders.
As Tajikistan begins to deport Afghan refugees – including Christians – many Afghans live in fear of what will happen when they are sent home. Pray that God would be with these believers as they face the unknown.
Pray that God would protect Open Doors partners in Tajikistan and throughout Central Asia as they deliver His Word and provide training and discipleship so the gospel can spread.
Lord God, strengthen the resolve of our family in Tajikistan as they encounter different challenges for their faith. Give church leaders wisdom, discernment and courage as they shepherd congregations in a hostile climate. We particularly pray for young people, asking You to raise up the next generation even as the authorities attempt to stop that. Guard converts from harm, and may their transformed lives speak powerfully to their families and friends, leading them to You. Amen.
Tunisia (No. 31)
As protests continue against one-party rule, pray that God would bring about freedom for His people in Tunisia to practice their faith.
Converts from Islam can face substantial persecution. Ask God to protect these believers.
While foreign Christians are often allowed to worship freely, Tunisian Christians don’t share that same freedom. Pray that followers of Jesus would find fellowship and grow in discipleship.
Our Heavenly Father, we thank You that You know each believer in Tunisia by name, and that each one is so precious to You. We ask You to protect believers as they seek to know You, to share Your good news, and to meet in fellowship with others. As Open Doors founder Brother Andrew prayed when smuggling Bibles across international borders, would You ‘make seeing eyes blind’ when it comes to state surveillance? And would You bring about increasing freedom for people to live out their faith in Tunisia? Amen.
Türkiye (No. 41)
Some politicians and leaders in Türkiye believe that all Turks should be Muslim. Pray for a softening of hearts and that people throughout the country will see the love and hope of Jesus in the lives of Christians.
Praise God that so many Turkish believers can worship openly. Ask Him to bless their worship and empower them to carry out the Great Commission.
When Muslims in Türkiye convert to follow Jesus, they can be shunned by their families and communities. Pray that these believers would find a sense of belonging and hope in the family of God.
Lord Jesus, we raise our brothers and sisters in Türkiye before You. We pray You will help them to shine the light of Your love in their families and communities, despite the pressures they face. We ask You to bless their efforts to share the good news of the gospel. Please bring comfort to anyone who has been shunned, rejected or harassed because of their faith. Amen.
Turkmenistan (No. 35)
Pray for unity among the people of God in Turkmenistan. Ask that God will break down walls and that the love of believers would be on display, as Jesus has commanded (John 17:21).
Many church leaders are heavily monitored by the totalitarian regime. Ask God to give them safety and courage.
Muslims who decide to follow Jesus in Turkmenistan may face rejection. Pray for healing and hope.
Sovereign Lord, we praise You for the small but vibrant church in Turkmenistan. Continue to awaken, strengthen and enlarge it, amid various challenges. We particularly remember converts: empower them by Your Holy Spirit to withstand pressure and shine as beacons of light in their families and communities. And for the leaders who feel so burdened today, lighten their loads and bring them timely encouragement. Soften the hearts of the regime, we pray. Amen
Uzbekistan (No. 25)
Churches and church leaders often come under surveillance by the authorities. Pray they would be able to lead others without harassment or harm.
Non-registered churches are especially targeted and raided. Ask God to protect believers who risk so much simply to meet and worship Him.
Ask that converts from Islam in Uzbekistan – who are often pressured by family, community and government to recant – will receive God’s grace and hope.
Heavenly Father, equip, encourage and empower our sisters and brothers in Uzbekistan as they face opposition for their faith. Give leaders wisdom and discernment as they navigate restrictions and surveillance, and for those especially weary today, give them a word to sustain them (Isaiah 50:4). As believers gather, often at great risk, enlarge their faith and inspire their courage. As the authorities monitor activities, may they unexpectedly encounter You. Amen.
Yemen (No. 3)
Yemen continues to be torn apart and wracked by violence. Pray that peace will finally come to this country.
The small number of Yemeni believers is growing – but each lives with the daily risk of violence and death. Pray for courage and hope.
Pray for the small, secret churches in Yemen. Ask God to help them find resources to be able to meet. Pray that underground church leaders would find strength and stamina to continue to serve God’s people.
Lord Jesus, thank You for our brave family in Yemen. Strengthen them today and flood them with Your peace. May each day bring word of Your unfailing love (Psalm 143:8). Deepen their faith, increase their courage, and make them increasingly sensitive to Your comforting and guiding voice. Protect them from harm, provide for every need, and create fresh opportunities for fellowship. Continue to draw people to You. Across Yemen, bring peace, stability and provision. Amen.
